The Setting
Located in south-west France, Domaine d'Alabrena is an intimate country house hotel in the beautifully sunny Languedoc. The two impressive stone buildings date from the middle ages, judging by the old stone windows and medieval tiles found during the renovation, but their foundations are earlier.
Prehistoric jewellery has been found in the underground caverns that run through the valley, the local church is one of the earliest in France and the area was much favoured by the Visigoths, some of whose architecture still remains. It seems our ancestors appreciated the tranquil beauty of the Nize valley and its gurgling trout stream!
The main house has been rebuilt and brought subtly into the 21st century. After two years hard work it boasts four premium double bedrooms with en-suite facilities and emerges as one of the most delightful small hotels in the area, with views over the river Nize which teems with trout and crayfish.
The restaurant enjoys a roaring log fire in the winter and spit roasts of locally caught game and fish. In the summer the windows slide open to bring a welcoming breeze, but you might prefer to dine alfresco on the terrace or enjoy one of our popular barbecues by the river.
Set in 200 organic acres with a 12m x 6m swimming pool, L'Alabrena makes a unique venue for companies or individuals requiring space and total privacy. It is also the most magical place to get married.
Also dating from the Middle Ages, the dower house is an impressive stone building with two premium double en-suite bedrooms on the ground floor. On the first floor, there is a third premium en-suite double bedroom and four further bedrooms, one with en-suite facilities.
Four of the bedrooms can be let as a self-contained unit, with private kitchen and dining facilities. Ideal for family gatherings or group bookings.
